Blue hour in Gstaad: a path lit by lanterns runs through the snow to a larch chalet with warm windows

I · Arrival · Gstaad

17:06. The lanterns along the path come on one by one. Upstairs, your fire is already lit.

Hôtel Aurenne is a chalet of twenty-two rooms and suites above the village of Gstaad, open in winter and in summer. Old larch, wool, a fire in every room and the mountains at the window.

Still life: a brass key on a leather tag, a sealed envelope, dried flowers and leather gloves on wool
The key, the letter and a pair of gloves for the walk up.

The key

Your key is brass. It is already waiting.

When you write to us, a letter is prepared for your arrival: your name in ink, a note on tomorrow's weather and a brass key on a leather tag. Keep it in your pocket. It opens your door and nothing else.

A suite at night: a fire in the hearth, a wide bed with wool throws and moonlit peaks through tall windows

II · 22:40 · The suite

22:40. The fire settles. The peaks stay lit by the moon.

Every suite faces the valley. Larch walls, wool throws, a deep bed and a fire laid while you were at dinner. The curtains are open; close them only if you want to.

Rooms and suites

Four ways to wake up here.

Every room is panelled in old larch and faces the mountains. Rates are per night for two, with breakfast, and shown as an example for this concept.

III · 07:20 · Morning

Breakfast comes to the window. The valley wakes up below.

Breakfast is served in your room or by the fire downstairs until eleven: warm bread, Alpine butter, mountain cheese and eggs as you like them. Take a blanket out to the balcony. The air is cold and very still.

The ski room: skis and boots on heated wooden racks under warm light

Winter, in practice

Warm boots at eight.

The ski room is on the ground floor, next to the door where the car waits. Leave skis and boots on the heated racks at night and find them dry and warm in the morning.

Heated racks
Boots and gloves dry overnight. Each room has its own locker.
Passes and lessons
Tell the concierge in the evening, and lift passes and an instructor can be ready in the morning.
To the lifts
The hotel car takes you to the valley stations of the Eggli, the Wispile and the Wasserngrat, and collects you afterwards.
A heated outdoor pool at dusk, steam rising over the water, with snow on the terrace and lit windows behind

IV · 16:45 · The pool

Snow at the edge. Warm water to the shoulders.

The outdoor pool is heated all year and steams in the cold. Inside are a larch sauna, a steam bath and two treatment rooms. The spa is open to hotel guests from 07:00 to 21:00.

The restaurant by candlelight: a sommelier pours red wine at a table set for two

V · 20:30 · Le Mélèze

Candlelight, a slow red, and nowhere else to be.

Le Mélèze serves a short menu from the valley and the lakes, cooked over wood. The sommelier keeps a cellar of Swiss wines, from Lavaux to the Valais, and pours by the glass.

VI · 23:47 · The concierge

A question at 23:47, answered in your language.

The concierge is an AI assistant. It answers at any hour in German, French, Italian, English, Spanish and Chinese, reserves a table or a spa time, and passes a ready summary to reception.

It is an assistant and does not replace reception. A person reads and confirms every request.
